Harry Potter Racism Rant
I watched bits of the two part finale of the Harry Potter movies during a recent memorial day marathon. I had previously only seen two of the movies until recently watching one other. Some things bugged me.
The main thing is, why are the wizards racists against the humans? The humans are by far the superior culture. It's not even close. It's a joke. The wizards have slavery. SLAVERY in 2010? As best I could tell, they don't have democracy. At least they have banking, but it isn't investment banking. They literally haven't developed capitalism. They don't make investment plans for greater productivity. They just reuse the same tired magical spells from a billion years ago. That magic is nothing but a weakness. It's holding them back and they are stuck in the past. All their answers are ancient, just like the Chinese in the Middle Ages.
What do they even learn at Wizard school? Do they even get a training in arithmetic? As best I could tell, only Harry has a problem with slavery. That's probably because he spent more time among humans learning the superior human culture. He probably learned of the origins of modern democracy and freedom. It's lucky for him. He probably learned Math and English too. Of course the wizards got to him before he could learn more than probably algebra, but at least he made it to the Arabic middle ages. Calculus and Transfinite set theory aren't on the course load. Nobody is studying quantum mechanics, which now show that any particle could be anywhere in the universe at literally any time.
They are like animals, basing everything on their physical abilities instead of their intellectual ones. I don't care if you have a bag that has some sort of dimensional wormhole in it or a quantum probability fluctuation that allows you to fit more stuff into it. At the end of the day, humans will soon learn to do everything you can do, and after that they'll do so much better.
Let's be clear. The Nuclear Bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed between 99,000 and 166,000 people and leveled a city. But the largest hydrogen bomb ever detonated used one of these as a primer to set it off. It measured in at about 3333 of one of the other bombs. That's not 3 of them. It's not 30 of them. It's not 300 of them either. Detonated in 1961, it sent shock waves around the earth three times.
Those wizards better wiggle those wands pretty hard if they want to protect their Gothic Cathedral rip off schools from anything like that. And for that matter, do they even have religion? They seem to perhaps have something, but mostly their morals are not connected to answers to the big metaphysical questions. Human cultures around the world developed the connection between religious attempts to answer the major metaphysical questions and the link to morality in about 500 BC.
And why do they hide from humans? Just why do they do that? The humans aren't the one's hiding are they? It's either arrogance or distrust. It can't be a political situation, since they hide completely. Isn't it clear that hiding is their real strength? They know all about humans, and the humans know nothing about them. Just think of it. What if they humans knew about them all along? How scary would they really be then? Then their physical abilities would have long been understood and improved upon with science. They are of course grossly outnumbered by humans as well. And they constantly look to the past and want to avoid change. They still can't figure out that slavery should be abolished. And they never take any influence in any way from some dreary old human. Of course no human author could have done or said something remotely meaningful right? Personally, I would much rather be a human. Much indeed.
Of course, sometimes if you are wondering how the wizards fit into the real world and other cultural facts, remind yourself it's just a show, and I should really just relax.
